Mission & Objectives

Having been founded in 1958, when the city of Chandigarh was in its infancy, the college has grown with the city, becoming an integral part of the region’s socio-cultural milieu. The college belongs to the family of the famous D.A.V. institutions, founded by Mahatma Hans Raj, and inspired by the great visionary-Swami Dayanand Saraswati-the doyen of the Arya Samaj, who believed that, “True education consists in promoting knowledge, civilized manners, virtuous character, self-control and other moral qualities and in dispelling ignorance”. He had always felt that the scientific knowledge of the west needs to be absorbed in the cultural milieu of India. The D.A.V. movement, which started in 1886, gives a practical shape to the ideal of Swami Dayanand’s educational philosophy which aims to develop a modern scientific approach among the students, coupled with an understanding of their roots in the ancient Vedic Culture.

The D.A.V. College, Chandigarh is trying to bring about this synthesis by imparting to the students the best of new world humanistic, scientific and technical knowledge with the sense of history of their rich cultural heritage-the Anglo and Vedic values. We work to achieve these broad objectives. The college was built from scratch with missionary zeal. Brick by brick, the early principals and teachers of the college put in super human efforts to launch the college. And those among the students who saw the college come up, knew exactly, what the growth had entailed.

They experienced first hand, the self less labour and love, and the sense of duty and discipline, which had gone into the making of the institution. It is this that makes many of these old students, themselves occupying high places, come back to the college for educating their sons and grand-sons, and now even daughters and grand-daughters. They believe that the skills and values ingrained in them, which helped them succeed in their lives, have been acquired by them in this institution. They not only remember their college for its academic excellence, its committed faculty and dedicated principals, its ever growing, impressive infrastructure and its start sportsmen, or grand festivals, but something tangible and lot more significant.

DistinctiveFeatures

Perhaps, our most distinctive characteristic is the perceptive freedom we allow to every young student to excel in his chosen field of endeavour and interest. That is one reason, we believe, that has helped us in moulding career of some of the best young men of this region. Offering of maximum facilities to the students so that they fulfil their potential has been the hallmark of the college. All incentives in the college, be they in the form of special coaching or counselling, extra books, sports equipment, free concessions, stipends, scholarships, etc. have not really to be applied for. They are theirs for the taking for the deserving students in all fields of academic, extra curricular and sports activities. All this has led the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) to declare the college as the “Model College” and the Panjab University to recogonise it as an institution with “Potential for Excellence”. The moment of crowning glory remains the award of A+Grade by NAAC to us.

The infrastructure and student support facilities available in the college have enabled us to remain on top in the region. Our students continue to bag top positions in studies. We have successfully launched post-graduate programmes in I.T., Commerce, English, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Maths, Zoology, Psychology, Public Administration and Sociology; and P.G. Diplomas in various fields. Our 4 year B.P. Ed. Programme has also been well received. This year we are starting M.B.E.

We have now won The Sir Shadi Lal Shield for General Efficiency and Excellence in Sports-a trophy given to the best college in sports amongst the 110 colleges affiliated to the Panjab University-35 years in a row. We have produced 54 International Sportsmen like the legendary Kapil Dev, Yuvraj Singh, Yograj, Dinesh Mongia and Jeev Milkha Singh. This tradition is alive and kicking even today. Our latest sensation is the international woman golfer Irina Brar. Young scholars, almost every year, inspired and fired by glowing examples of their predecessors do their best to maintain the high levels of excellence that are very rarely achieved elsewhere. When they come here success is only a sacred word in their prayers, when they leave success is actually a solid weapon in their hands. With this weapon they proceed to win all battles of life.

Our achievements have enabled us to play host to four Vice-Presidents, one Prime Minister, several Union Ministers, Governors, Chief Ministers and other dignitaries. They have graced many an occasion in the college and blessed and motivated the students and staff.

Social Commitment

A practical demonstration of our students’ attitude can be seen in the concern they develop for their country and their community. They actively imbibe the spirit of social service and many of them join the arm forces. To the martyrs from our college, we have dedicated our Administrative Block and named it ‘Shaurya Bhavan’. The idea of service to the community and the nation is reinforced through the homage that is paid to the martyrs at their memorial in the college before the start of any function by all dignitaries visiting the college from time to time. Our students involve themselves in programmes like Blood Donation, Drug-de-addiction, AIDS awareness, Pulse Polio Campaign and service to the blind, etc. We have also joined a project to give shelter to street children.

Teaching / Learning and Evaluation

The college enjoys its enviable position because of effective teaching-learning and evaluation processes. Students are selected on the basis of their past academic performance after an interview.

They are provided appropriate counselling at the time of admission. Their knowledge, skills and attendance in class are regularly monitored and their parents are kept posted with their wards’ performance. Almost all departments have a success rate in excess of 90% in the university exams. A system of continuous assessment of students has been introduced. The faculty, which remains constantly on its toes in upgrading itself and its methods, keeps a keen eye on the activities of the youngsters. Students are encouraged to develop one or the other interest, hobby, beyond their studies and their participation in college activities is rewarded accordingly.

The courses set by the University are covered intensively with the help of all available teaching aids available in the college. The faculty use computers/ multimedia/ audiovisual aids to make lectures interesting. A variety of teaching methods combining the traditional lecture with laboratory-based practicals, tutorials and seminar teaching, wherever required, are employed. Term wise teaching plans and unitized syllabi help the students/ teachers gauge their performance and progress. Regular tests, mock competitive tests, and other subject related quizzes, contests, etc. are arranged to monitor students’ reading, and for creating interest in and awareness of the subjects. All departments have their own subject societies for arranging extra-curricular activities.

Research Cell

A research cell has been established in the college with a corpus of Rupees 10 lacs to promote research temperament and culture. Seven major and four minor projects sponsored by the U.G.C. and other funding agencies have been undertaken by the faculty for which a grant of Rs. 4,35,66,893/- was received during the session 2005-06 from various agencies.

Senior Citizens Programmes

DAV College has been actively engaged, in caring for its Senior Citizens, apart from its regular academics and sports. Every year at least 2 batches of senior citizens, about 100 in number attend the Computer Literacy Programme, free of cost, for a month or so. They are taught basics of Computers Operation, which consist of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet. Keeping up with the changing times, it is very necessary that every citizen should be technologically savvy and familiar with the developments in this field. The programme was started in November, 2004 and so far 550 citizens have been benefited from this course.

Infrastructure

Our greatest advantage is that the college is located in the heart of the city, easily accessible to commuters from outside and different sectors of the ‘City Beautiful’. We have well-appointed buildings with spacious classrooms, sprawling lawns, a beautiful seminar complex with audio visual aids, two auditoriums, a cyber café, 23 sophisticated labs, well-equipped Gymnasium and vast playgrounds. Besides this, we have a big coffee house and a separate canteen on the campus. The approach is to provide all immediate and much needed services to the scholars inside the college itself. A doctor remains on duty in the college dispensary to attend to the minor ailments/ diseases of staff/ students.

Healthy Practices

Along with an introductory course in computers, a compulsory personality development programme has been launched. This would train our students in the aspects of modern deportment-from helping them prepare their resumes to appearing before the interview boards, and teaching them the latest communication techniques-things significant, but really beyond the scope of university examination oriented courses. The college attempts to cater to the special needs of all students in various ways. It organizes remedial to competition classes. It provides an environment which facilitates learning. Small things, such as the availability of clean drinking water-be it though dispensers or filters, show the sensitive concern of the college for its students.

Ragging and smoking are prohibited on the campus. Similarly, students are not allowed to go in for fashion shows that denigrate the human body or wear dresses which are exhibitionist. Musical concerts which encourage vulgarity and obscenity are not allowed in the college. Anti-drugs, antiviolence and anti-booze programmes are organized. Such activities have the active participation of the Students’ Central Association. The students are only allowed two wheelers on the campus so that they realize the need of observing some austerity, and also contribute to the conservation of natural resources. Our endeavour is to produce sensitive and successful humans in tune with the demands of modern times.

With the introduction of new courses/ programmes in the college, and added emphasis on research, the college hopes to further improve the quality of education. We recognize the students’ need to grow in life, and support them in every way. Our new and strengthened Placement Cell would Endeavour to find the most suitable opportunities for them.

Discipline

The college lays special emphasis on the maintenance of discipline and proper decorum in and outside the classroom.

Students are expected to show proper respect to their teachers, be polite to one another and show courtesy to the employees of the college.

In order to create the right academic atmosphere in the college, the students should maintain silence while moving on the campus and sitting in the Library. Movement from one room to another should be orderly. In vacant periods the students must move to the Library.

Absence from the composition or tutorial period entails a fine and disciplinary action.

Smoking and any ragging are strictly prohibited on the College Campus and Hostel Premises. Crossing through lawns is to be avoided.

No cycling is permitted on the College Campus. All cycles should be parked in the space provided for them. The students are not allowed to park cars either inside or outside the College.

Quarrels and disputes with fellow students should be avoided. A complaint in writing should at once be made to the Principal whenever there is dispute. The students should not take the law into their own hands.

Students who violate the above rules shall be liable to punishment which may be in the form of a heavy fine, withdrawal of concessions and stipends and in extreme cases, expulsion from the college.

Use of Mobile Phones on the campus by the students is strictly prohibited. A fine of Rs. 1000/- would be levied on any student caught violating this rule.

Tutorial System

The college designates tutors for every class who are responsible for the students of that class. They look after the general and special needs of the students.

The role of the teachers is crucial in counseling and even more, setting an example before their students. Right from the time of admission and initial interaction in the class, to finding about the problems, hobbies/strengths of their students and guiding them in following their dreams/interests, the teachers are the key players in shaping the career of their students. They identify the weak and the talented students and counsel them likewise.

Counselling

College also provides the services of a professional counsellor for the students who fall prey to the stress and strain of academic burden or face other personal problems.
