Achievements


Academics :

Our students excelled in the Panjab University Exams held in 2008. The college pass percentage was much higher than the University pass percentage. We achieved 100% results in as many as 32 classes and in 24 classes our results were between 90% and 99%. More classes our results were between 90% and 99%. More than 200 students of the college were placed in the merit listof the P.U. In 15 courses we scored top positions in the University. About 30 students got admission to IIMs and other prestigious management institutions of the country.


Department of Psychology

A workshop was held on the “Rorschach Inkblot test” conducted by Dr. Adarsh Kohli, Additional Professor of Psychology, PGIMER on 6th February, 2007. She explained to the students the intricacies of administering & interpreting the test. A hands-on session was also held where the students had the opportunity of taking the test and interpreting their own responses.

A seminar on “Self Empowerment” was held on 20th September, 2007. Mrs. Anita Bansal, Life empowerment guide interacted with the audience and gave practical tips and demonstrations to the audience to manage stress effectively and enhance their happiness and satisfaction. A talk was held on “Hypnotherapy” by Mrs. Bina Gopal on the 3rd September, 2008. A trained hypnotherapist from the California Institute of Hypnotherapy, removed many doubts regarding the scientific nature of hypnotherapy. A hypnotherapy demonstration was also given.


Department of Biotechnology

The department of Biotechnology boasts of a proud history of producing not only the best of brains but also a succession of creative students who have brought laurels to the College. Although it is not a very old department yet it has established itself really well in a short span of 5 years. The enthusiastic gems of the department organized a fete 'Nebula-2008' during the session 2007-08. The Biotechnology Activity club popularly known as BAC donated the profit amount of Rs. 15000/- earned from the fete to 'Sankalp' for the treatment of critically ill children in PGI, Chandigarh. Year after year the students from the Department have been  representing  the  college  at  various  levels including youth festivals. Our students participated in the Biotech Fest HEMERA-2008 hosted by SUSCET, Tangori,  Mohali  and  won  three  prizes.  Dolly  and Abhishek won the First Prize in Bio-merchandising. Rabia Bhardwaj won second prize in Cross word and Dolly Sandhu won Third prize in the same event. The most active students in cultural activities who participated  and won various competitions include :Divyakriti  Chopra, Surveen Pannu, Shagun Sharma, Ranjan Pirta, Himshikha Bhutani, Meenakshi Jain, Akriti Gupta, Surender Singh and Gurmeet Kaur.


Master of Business Economics

During a short span of two years the Course has become very popular among the student community. The first and the second batch of students completed their summer internship training in  reputed companies. Some of these organizations are ; Aviva Life Insurance, India Bulls, Birla Sunlife Insurance, Max Life Insurance, NITCON, Fortis Healthcare Ltd., HDFC, HSBC Bank, ICICI Prudential, Axis Bank, Tata Teleservices Ltd., SBI Mutual Funds, Reliance Money, Catholic Syrian Bank, Godrej & Boyce  Manufacturing  Co.  Ltd.,  Krur  Vysya  Bank, Innovative Consultancy, the Shapers placement cell.


KAIZEN club  was formed by the students of this professional course to excel in their creativity and passion for learning. Various activities are organized by this club from time to time. Group discussions and power point presentations are common features of KAIZEN.


Talks Organized during the year :-

1.   A lecture on “Mutual Funds : The fast growing  business” was delivered by Mr. Munish Sabharwal, Branch Head, SBI Mutual Funds, Chandigarh.

2.   Prof.  S.C.  Vaidya,  Chairman (2007),  University Business  School,  gave  a  talk  on “Accounting Trends”.

3.   A  talk  was  given  by  Mr.  Arvind  Pandey,  ICICI Prudential  Life  Insurance  on “Insurance  as  a business”.

Industrial Trip :-The students visited Garg Acrylics in Ludhiana and Vardhman Mills in Baddi to enrich their practical knowledge.

Excursion :-The students were taken to Puspha Gujral Science City, Kapurthala for an excursion.

Placement

25 students of first batch (2006-08) were successfully selected  by  various  companies  in  the  campus placement drive. The companies where our students are presently working include :

ACE DATA DEVICES PVT. LTD., YES BANK, AXIS BANK, STATE BANK OF INDIA,    HSBC BANK, DR. IT, MBEE FINANCIAL SERVICES, KARUR VYSYA BANK, THE  SHAPERS  PLACEMENT  CELL,    RELIANCE MONEY.


History Department

History is one of those academic disciplines that forms a bridge between the past and the present. Keeping in mind, the interest of the students and the staff in History, the Department of History organized various activities during the academic session 2008-09. The History Association regularly holds Quizes on various themes and topics. Two preliminary rounds of the quiz were held in the months of September and November. The final round was held in February, 2009.

In the month of August, the students along with the History faculty visited the Museum in Chandigarh. In November, the History Association organized a one day trip to two sites in Punjab. The two sites included a visit to the Kushan site at Sanghol which boasts of a vibrant Buddhist culture  2000 years ago. Later the students visited the historical monuments in Fatehgarh Sahib which included the monumental Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib and Islamic Sufi Shrine of Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi. In November, the History Association Screened the Oscar Winning Movie 'Gandhi' in the College Auditorium which got a tremendous response from students who avidly watched the movie and followed it by a discussion on Gandhian principles and ideologies.


Co-Curricular Activities :

During 2008-09 we scaled new heights in the Panjab University  Youth  and Heritage Festival  leaving  our competitors far behind. This year we won 25 positions (7 first, 7 second and 11 third) in the Zonal Youth

Festival. In the Inter Zonal Youth festival we won 5 first prizes and 2 second prizes and in the North Zone Youth Festival our record is unparalleled. We participated in 4 items and won top positions in Mimicry and Quiz and second position in Mime. At the national level our drama 'Joshiley' and Mime have secured the second best place, which is a rare achievement for us.

Our Drama team (AAGHAAZ) won accolades at the IIT Mood Indigo Fest held in Mumbai. Our students won top honours in Situational Acting and second place in Dance  'n'  Drama.  Our  student  Siddharth  won  a scholarship of Rs. 1.5 lac for admission to Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting School, Mumbai. AAGHAAZ also shot a silent movie which has been admired by one and all. Siddharth is the lead actor in that movie.


Quiz Club

Our Quiz Club has been very active through out and reached the Nationals after winning the 24th North Zone Youth Festival held at Panjab University campus. They had earlier won the first position in Zonal and Inter-Zonal Youth Festivals. The Quiz team comprises Akshay Bishnoi, Gurinder Pal and Swati Mital. Other teams which participated in Various quiz competitions and won prizes include
(i)  Shivender  Bhardwaj  & Prikshit Sharma and
(iii) Dheeraj and Yatin. Both teams won third prizes at Inter-college competitions held at G.G.D.S.D. College, Sector-32, Chandigarh and M.C.M. D.A.V.  College,  Sector 36,  Chandigarh  respectively. Besides  these  our  quiz  team  won  competitions organized by Chandigarh Librarians Association, PEC University,  History  Dept.  Govt.  College11,  Sahitya Academy, Chandigarh.


Music Club

Music is the soul of all activities. Without music life world be dull. Our Music Club infuses life into various events during the Youth Festival. Since the college does not offer music as a subject, experts are hired to train students. This year our students won 8 prizes in Zonal and Inter Zonal Youth Festivals. We won overall trophy in music at the Inter-College Fest held at Dev Samaj College for Women, Chandigarh.


Bhangra Club

2008-09 has been a session of achievements for the Bhangra Club. In the Zonal Youth Festival organized by Panjab  University,  Chandigarh  the  Bhangra  team bagged the first prize and in the Folk Dances category, Jhummar got the second prize. Mandeep Singh and Joginder Pal were declared the best dancers. In the Inter Zonal Youth Fest - 2008 the Bhangra team won the second prize. In the Inter-Zonal Youth Fest Jugwinder Pal Singh and Jatinder Jyot Singh were declared the best dancers. The College Bhangra team performed in the “Heritage”  Festival  organized  by  the  DAV  College Managing Committee in Delhi, on 21st December. This team is always in demand whenever and wherever big cultural shows are held.


Public Administration Society

The Society organized an Intra College Quiz contest and a workshop on Good Governance. The Society takes keen interest in overall development of the students. special lectures are arranged for postgraduate students of the Department of Public Administration. Movie 'Swades' was screened for the students to inculcate in them Indian values.


Hindi - Sanskrit Sahitya Parishad

Prof.  Surendra  Kumar  delivered  a  lecture  on  the “Relationship between Sanskrit, Hindi languages and culture”.

A creative writing competition was organized for the students in the month of September. The categories of this competition were essay writing, short story writing and poetry writing. The first prize winners of the three categories

were as follows :-

The beginning of New Year was celebrated with the “Kavi-Sammelan” in which students of the college recited their self composed poems as well as the poetry of their favorite Hindi poets.

Certificates and Prizes were given away by Principal Dr. B.C. Josan.


Foreign Students’  Association

We have a considerable number of foreign students studying in the college pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses. They have come from countries like  Bhutan, Tibet, Afghanistan, Thailand, Mauritius, Sudan etc. On 20th January, 2009, foreign students organized a function in the college in which they presented a colourful cultural programme. Mr. Gian Chand, Regional Officer from ICCR was the Chief Guest. The students from Tibet presented 'Yak Dance', Buddha dance etc. The students from Afghanistan presented 'Altan Dance' and rocked the stage. Fashion show was also organized in their traditional attire. The principal, Dr. B.C. Josan, welcomed the Chief Guest and blessed the students. Dean, Foreign students, Prof. Rita Jain, assured every help and support to the students for their comfortable stay during their study programme in the college. On 1st February, 2009 a talk was arranged for the foreign students on the topic 'Indian Social System' to apprise them of the social set up of India so that they could adjust themselves in the system during their stay in India.


Women Cell

The Women Cell of the College has been active in various Projects to help and strengthen the Women Fraternity. These Projects include Donation to needy, poor women and children. International Women's Day was celebrated on 7th March, 2009 on the theme 'Women Welfare  and  Empowerment'.  A  Cultural Programme and a book exhibition was also organized.
